3004 Aluminum Alloy
3004 is 3003 with magnesium added — 0.8–1.3% Mg on top of the manganese. That takes it about 30% stronger than 3003 while keeping the same corrosion family, and it is the reason 3004 dominates beverage can bodies and roofing coil that has to resist buckling.

3004 Chemical Composition Limits
Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 3004.
| Element | Limit (% wt) | Element | Limit (% wt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si | 0.30 max | Fe | 0.7 max |
| Cu | 0.25 max | Mn | 1.0 – 1.5 |
| Mg | 0.8 – 1.3 | Cr | — |
| Zn | 0.25 max | Ti | — |
| Other, each | 0.05 max | Other, total | 0.15 max |
| Al | Remainder |
Composition limits are the Aluminum Association registered ranges, which is what ASTM B209 and EN 573-3 both refer back to. Mechanical values are typical for the temper shown, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Typical Mechanical Properties by Temper
Room temperature, longitudinal direction. Use these to compare grades and tempers — the acceptance figures for your order come from the product standard and are reported on the mill certificate for the actual heat.
| Temper | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Thermal conductivity (W/m·K) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H32 | 210 | 170 | 7.4 | 160 |
Other tempers in the 3004 range — O · H32 · H34 · H36 · H38 · H112 — are available to order. Values for those are quoted with the offer rather than assumed from this table.
Forms
3004 in the Forms We Supply
The same alloy behaves differently as coil, plate and extrusion because the rolling or extrusion route sets the temper and the surface. Pick the form first, then the temper.
Aluminum Coil
Continuously cast or hot-rolled coil for roll forming and stamping.

Aluminum Sheet & Plate
Rolled flat product from 0.2 mm foil stock to 200 mm plate.

Aluminum Strip
Slit coil with controlled edge burr and camber.

Where it is used
Typical End Uses for 3004
Packaging & Foil
Pinhole count, elongation and surface cleanliness are the three numbers that decide whether a foil runs on your line.
Building & Curtain Wall
Facade work is a coating problem first and a metal problem second. PVDF film thickness and anodizing class are what the specifier checks.
Transport & Automotive
Weight reduction per body panel is the entire business case. Formability and weldability decide the grade.
Selection
Choose 3004 When — and When Not To
Choose 3004 when
Thin-gauge coil that has to hold stiffness — can body stock, roofing and siding coil, and container sheet where 3003 would oil-can.
Think again if
Deep drawing beyond moderate depth; the magnesium reduces ductility. For severe drawing stay on 3003-O or move to 5052-O.
Before you ask
3004 — Questions Buyers Ask
What is the difference between 3004 and 3003?
Magnesium. 3004 adds 0.8–1.3% Mg, which raises strength by roughly 30% and lowers elongation. Both are Al-Mn based, non-heat-treatable and equally corrosion resistant in normal service.
Why is 3004 used for can bodies?
Because thin wall and internal pressure pull in opposite directions. 3004-H19 gives the strength to hold pressure at low gauge, and it thins evenly in the wall-ironing process.
Is 3004 available in tread plate?
Usually not — tread plate is normally 3003 or 5052 base with the pattern rolled in. If a drawing specifies 3004 tread, treat it as a mill enquiry rather than stock.
