7075 Aluminum Alloy
7075 is a zinc-magnesium-copper alloy and the highest-strength grade in normal commercial supply. In T651 it reaches about 550 MPa tensile and 460 MPa yield. It is an aerospace and tooling alloy, and it is a poor choice anywhere the part will be welded or exposed to sustained salt and stress.

Chemistry
7075 Chemical Composition Limits
Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 7075.
| Element | Limit (% wt) | Element | Limit (% wt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si | 0.40 max | Fe | 0.50 max |
| Cu | 1.2 – 2.0 | Mn | 0.30 max |
| Mg | 2.1 – 2.9 | Cr | 0.18 – 0.28 |
| Zn | 5.1 – 6.1 | Ti | 0.20 max |
| Other, each | 0.05 max | Other, total | 0.15 max |
| Al | Remainder |
Composition limits are the Aluminum Association registered ranges, which is what ASTM B209 and EN 573-3 both refer back to. Mechanical values are typical for the temper shown, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Typical Mechanical Properties by Temper
Room temperature, longitudinal direction. Use these to compare grades and tempers — the acceptance figures for your order come from the product standard and are reported on the mill certificate for the actual heat.
| Temper | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Thermal conductivity (W/m·K) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T651 | 550 | 460 | 8.2 | 130 |
Other tempers in the 7075 range — O · T6 · T651 · T73 · T7351 — are available to order. Values for those are quoted with the offer rather than assumed from this table.
Forms
7075 in the Forms We Supply
The same alloy behaves differently as coil, plate and extrusion because the rolling or extrusion route sets the temper and the surface. Pick the form first, then the temper.

Where it is used
Typical End Uses for 7075
Industrial & Machining
Machining stock. Grain direction, residual stress relief (T651) and dimensional stability decide whether the part moves after it is cut.
Transport & Automotive
Weight reduction per body panel is the entire business case. Formability and weldability decide the grade.
Selection
Choose 7075 When — and When Not To
Choose 7075 when
Aerospace fittings and jigs, high-stress tooling, moulds and any part where strength per kilo decides the design. T651 for machined plate; T73 where stress-corrosion resistance matters more than peak strength.
Think again if
Welding — 7xxx is effectively unwelded in structural service. Also avoid sustained tensile stress in a corrosive environment in T6/T651; that is the classic stress-corrosion cracking failure.
Before you ask
7075 — Questions Buyers Ask
Why specify 7075-T73 instead of T651?
T73 over-ages the alloy deliberately, giving up about 5–10% strength to gain resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Use it wherever the part carries sustained tension in a corrosive environment.
Can 7075 be welded?
Not in structural service. The alloy is generally considered non-weldable by conventional fusion processes because of hot cracking and loss of properties. Assemblies are bolted, bonded or riveted.
Does 7075 need a mill certificate?
Aerospace and defence buyers require EN 10204 3.1 at minimum, usually with AMS traceability and sometimes 3.2 with a purchaser representative. State the certificate type on the enquiry, because it changes the price and lead time.
Is 7075 available in sheet?
Yes, typically 0.5–6 mm as alclad or bare sheet, and plate from 6 mm to about 150 mm. Alclad 7075 is used where corrosion resistance matters, with a thin 7072 layer rolled onto the surface.
