6082 Aluminum Alloy
6082 is the European structural 6xxx alloy, with more silicon and manganese than 6061. In T6 it reaches roughly 330 MPa tensile and 270 MPa yield, about 5–10% stronger than 6061, and it is normally specified to EN 755 for extrusion or EN 485 for sheet and plate.

6082 Chemical Composition Limits
Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 6082.
| Element | Limit (% wt) | Element | Limit (% wt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si | 0.70 – 1.30 | Fe | 0.50 max |
| Cu | 0.10 max | Mn | 0.40 – 1.0 |
| Mg | 0.60 – 1.20 | Cr | 0.25 max |
| Zn | 0.20 max | Ti | 0.10 max |
| Other, each | 0.05 max | Other, total | 0.15 max |
| Al | Remainder |
Composition limits are the Aluminum Association registered ranges, which is what ASTM B209 and EN 573-3 both refer back to. Mechanical values are typical for the temper shown, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Typical Mechanical Properties by Temper
Room temperature, longitudinal direction. Use these to compare grades and tempers — the acceptance figures for your order come from the product standard and are reported on the mill certificate for the actual heat.
| Temper | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Thermal conductivity (W/m·K) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T6 | 330 | 270 | 9.8 | 160 |
Other tempers in the 6082 range — O · T4 · T6 · T651 · T6511 — are available to order. Values for those are quoted with the offer rather than assumed from this table.
Forms
6082 in the Forms We Supply
The same alloy behaves differently as coil, plate and extrusion because the rolling or extrusion route sets the temper and the surface. Pick the form first, then the temper.

Where it is used
Typical End Uses for 6082
Transport & Automotive
Weight reduction per body panel is the entire business case. Formability and weldability decide the grade.
Industrial & Machining
Machining stock. Grain direction, residual stress relief (T651) and dimensional stability decide whether the part moves after it is cut.
Building & Curtain Wall
Facade work is a coating problem first and a metal problem second. PVDF film thickness and anodizing class are what the specifier checks.
Selection
Choose 6082 When — and When Not To
Choose 6082 when
Crane and lifting structures, truck frames, machine frames, bridge and rail components — anywhere a European drawing calls up 6082 and the strength budget is tight.
Think again if
Tight-radius cold bending and thin-wall complex extrusions; 6061 extrudes more easily. Also not a marine immersion alloy.
Before you ask
6082 — Questions Buyers Ask
Is 6082 stronger than 6061?
Yes, by roughly 5–10% in T6 — about 330 MPa against 310 MPa tensile. The gap comes from higher silicon and the manganese addition, which refine the strengthening precipitates.
Can 6082 be substituted for 6061?
Only with the customer agreement, because the composition limits differ and the certificate will name a different grade. Mechanically it is stronger, but drawings and approvals are written against a specific designation.
Which standard covers 6082 extrusion?
EN 755 for extruded bar, rod, tube and profile, and EN 485 for sheet and plate. The American equivalent is ASTM B221, but 6082 is rarely stocked in North America.
Does 6082 weld?
Yes, with 4043 or 5356 filler, and it retains post-weld strength slightly better than 6061. It still loses the T6 condition in the heat-affected zone, so welded assemblies are designed on softened properties.
