5754 Aluminum Alloy

5754 contains 2.6–3.6% magnesium and is the grade European automotive and rail suppliers specify where 5052 is not quite strong enough and 5083 is too stiff to form. It forms and welds well, and it is normally ordered to EN 485 rather than ASTM.

Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 5754.

Composition limits are the Aluminum Association registered ranges, which is what ASTM B209 and EN 573-3 both refer back to. Mechanical values are typical for the temper shown, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Choose 5754 When — and When Not To

Choose 5754 when

Body panels, rail interiors, silkscreen and anodizing stock, and welded structures where the drawing is written to EN 485.

Think again if

High-strength structural parts — the grade is work-hardened only. Above 65 °C service the usual 5xxx sensitization limit applies.

Before you ask

5754 — Questions Buyers Ask

5754 or 5052 for automotive panels?

5754 if the drawing is European; 5052 if it is North American. Mechanically they are close, but the composition limits differ and a certificate has to match the grade named on the drawing.

Why is 5754 popular for anodized trim?

It takes a uniform anodic film with less streaking than 5052, and the surface quality from European rolling lines is consistent enough for visible trim without special rolling.

Can 5754 be laser welded?

Yes, and it is one of the more forgiving 5xxx grades for laser and MIG processes. Filler is normally 5356. Because the alloy is not heat-treatable, the softened heat-affected zone sets the design strength.
